Preparing for a storm or flood

All parts of the Alpine Shire are at risk of experiencing damage from storms, and low-lying areas can be impacted by flooding during extreme rain events.

Be aware of your specific hazards and develop an emergency plan.

What is a flood?

Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is usually dry. Floods usually happen during heavy rains and can include flash flooding.

The Victoria State Emergency Services (VICSES) is the lead agency for all storms and floods in Victoria.

What is a storm?

A storm is a severe weather event and could include heavy rain, strong winds, hail, thunder, and lightning.

When is a flood or storm most likely to occur?

Floods and storms can occur at any time of the year. Flooding is more likely to occur during the winter months, with August experiencing the most rainfall.

How do I prepare?

The VICSES provides advice on how to get ready for a storm or flood. In a flood or storm emergency, visit the VICSES website for up-to-date information.

Receive immediate updates as they occur by downloading the VicEmergency app.

Driving in a flood

In the event you get caught in a flood, do not drive through the floodwaters. Floodwater may be deeper and faster flowing than it appears and often contains hidden snags, washouts and debris.

A road closed or a road flooded sign means that the road is unsafe to travel on. Find alternate ways which are free from flood water or wait until the all clear is given for that road. It is safer to turn around than to enter floodwater.

If there is a flooded road which does not have a road closed or road flooded sign, do not use it. It is unsafe to travel through floodwater.

Localised flood guides

In partnership with the Attorney-General's Department of Emergency Management Australia, North East Management Catchment Authority, Rural City of Wangaratta, the Victorian Government, and VICSES, we have prepared localised flood guides for the Kiewa Valley, Myrtleford, and the Ovens Valley.

What does Council do to prepare?

Council's Municipal Flood Emergency Plan outlines the responsibility and roles of Council and other stakeholders in the case of flooding in the Alpine Shire.
