Impounding refers to the act of taking a domestic animal to a facility, such as a pound or another home, until its owner collects it.
Impounded animals
Domestic animals that have been found wandering outside of their homes may be picked up by the Local Laws team and impounded in the Council pound.
If you suspect your animal has been impounded, contact Council during business hours.
If your animal has been impounded, you will be asked to identify the animal. If it is yours, you will be required to sign a release form and pay the appropriate impounding fee at the Council Office in Bright. Your animal will then be collected from the pound by our Local Laws team and reunited with you at the Council Office.
For larger animals, our Local Laws team will advise of appropriate pick up or drop off.
Animals that trespass on private property can be impounded by the owner of that property. If you have impounded an animal that does not belong to you, you must contact Council so that the animal can be moved to the Council pound.
If you have impounded a domestic animal after hours, or believe your domestic animal has been impounded after hours, contact Council to arrange pick up. You will be redirected to our On-Call team.
Impounded animals will only be released during business hours.

Small and large stock may also include the cost of cartage and advertising. Stock will be held for a minimum of seven days in the pound. If they are not claimed within this period, they will be taken to market and sold.
All cats and dogs over the age of three months must be registered before they are released from the pound. Cats and dogs will be held for a minimum of eight days. After this period, suitable animals will be rehomed and unsuitable animals will be euthanised.
