'Take a Lodger' campaign launched to tackle housing shortages

Alpine Shire Council is partnering with local real estate agents to introduce the Take a Lodger Program, a creative solution to help address the region’s housing shortages.

10 December 2024

This initiative encourages homeowners with spare rooms to open their doors to lodgers, providing affordable housing options and strengthening community connections.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, said the program offers significant benefits for both homeowners and lodgers.

“Our Shire is facing real challenges with housing shortages, and the Take a Lodger Program is a fantastic way to better utilise existing homes while providing financial and social benefits to homeowners,” she said.

“It’s a win-win. Homeowners can earn extra income, improve security, and enjoy social connection, while lodgers gain access to affordable accommodation in a tight rental market.”

The program includes a partnership with local real estate agents who will provide a matching service.

This service will connect homeowners with suitable lodgers, undertake reference checks, and provide sample rental agreements.

“This campaign is about more than just housing; it’s about strengthening our community,” Cr Nicholas said.

“Whether it’s an older person seeking company, a family looking for extra income, or someone needing affordable housing, this program creates opportunities for everyone.”

Homeowners interested in taking a lodger can reach out to local agencies listed on the Council’s website.
