The Alpine Shire is facing significant housing shortages, impacting individuals, families, and our local economy.
In response, we’re launching the Take a Lodger Program, a community-focussed initiative that encourages homeowners with spare rooms to rent them out to individuals seeking accommodation.
This program aims to better utilise existing housing, easing the pressure on housing availability while offering benefits for both homeowners and lodgers.
How it works
Local real estate agents will offer a 'matching service' to connect homeowners with lodgers. This service includes:
- A register of people seeking to rent a room;
- A register of homeowners willing to take in a lodger;
- Matching lodgers with homeowners based on suitability;
- Reference checks for lodgers; and,
- Providing homeowners with a sample agreement for the rental arrangement.
Ongoing rental payments will be managed directly between the homeowner and the lodger.
Benefits of Taking a Lodger
For Homeowners
- Additional Income: Help with the rising cost of living.
- Social Connection: Companionship for those living alone, particularly older residents.
- Home Security: Added peace of mind when you’re away.
- Support with Chores: Lodgers can assist with household tasks, if agreed.
For Lodgers
- Access to affordable accommodation in a challenging rental market.
- A chance to become part of a supportive household.
- Flexibility compared to traditional rentals.
