Council regulates the use of spaces along roads and streets to ensure they are safe, accessible, and properly maintained for public use, while managing activities that take place in these areas.
Vehicle crossings
Landowners must make sure that any driveway or vehicle crossing from the road to their property is built and maintained according to Council rules.
You cannot build, install, remove, or change a vehicle crossing without a Council permit. If a Council officer finds that a vehicle crossing is in poor condition or needs repair, they can issue a Notice to Comply to the property owner or occupier, requiring it to be fixed.
If building work will require vehicles to enter or leave the property without using proper driveways, the person in charge must get a permit to create a temporary vehicle crossing. This temporary crossing must protect the road and any adjoining areas, such as footpaths, nature strips, culverts, or kerbs.
The person overseeing the building work is also responsible for repairing any damage to the vehicle crossing to the satisfaction of a Council officer. If the officer believes that the existing driveway, footpath, kerb, or other road areas could be damaged during the work, the builder may be required to pay a bond to the Council when requested.
Trees, plants and nature strips
You must not let any trees, plants, or other materials damage or interfere with Council land. Additionally, you should ensure that any trees or plants on your property do not block pedestrians or vehicles.
If you want to create a garden bed, plant a tree, or perform any work on a nature strip, you need to obtain a permit first.
Signs and trading on Council land
You must not put up or allow someone else to put up an advertising sign on Council land, including on a parked vehicle on the road, without obtaining a permit.
Additionally, you cannot set up a vehicle, caravan, trailer, table, chairs, stall, or any similar structure on Council land to sell or offer goods or services without a permit.
Selling or offering goods or services, including through signs, on Council land is also not allowed without proper authorisation.
To use an outdoor eating facility on a footpath or any part of a road, you must obtain a permit. Establishing or continuing to use such a facility without a permit is not allowed.
Busking and street entertainment
Busking and providing street entertainment on Council land is permitted with a valid permit, ensuring compliance with local regulations while allowing individuals to share their talents with the community.
