Alpine Shire Tracks and Trails Project

The Tracks and Trails Project is a comprehensive analysis of the Alpine Shire's existing network of trails, resulting in a Tracks and Trails Master Plan.

What is the Tracks and Trails Project?

The Tracks and Trails Project aims to identify gaps, explore opportunities for improvement, and safeguard the environment to ensure that all users - residents and visitors alike - can continue to enjoy these outdoor spaces now and into the future.

The project will result in a Tracks and Trails Master Plan, which will guide the development and enhancement of our trails for greater accessibility, sustainability, and community benefit.

Background

The Alpine Shire’s diverse and breathtaking landscapes make it a sought-after destination for outdoor recreation. However, with increasing demand for hiking, biking, and trail experiences, it is essential to evaluate and improve the current network to:

  • Address pressures on existing trails;
  • Promote sustainable trail use;
  • Align with local and global trends in outdoor recreation; and
  • Identify any new trails / connections that are lacking.

Through collaboration with land managers, local communities, and trail users, the project aims to create a trail network that not only meets today’s needs, but also anticipates future demands.

Why is the project needed?

Outdoor recreation is at the heart of the Alpine Shire’s identity. However, the increasing demand for trail use has highlighted gaps in the existing network, including limitations in accessibility, sustainability, and variety.

This project is crucial to:

  • Meet the growing interest in outdoor recreation, particularly mountain biking;
  • Diversify trail offerings to enhance the user experience;
  • Preserve the environment while promoting active lifestyles; and
  • Strengthen community ties by creating spaces for social interaction and cultural exchange.

What is in scope?

The project focuses on:

  • Sustainability, by evaluating the environmental impact of current trails and improving their resilience;
  • Accessibility, by ensuring trails cater to a wide range of users with varying abilities;
  • Trail diversity, by exploring new trail styles and expanding offerings to alleviate pressure on existing trails; and
  • Stakeholder collaboration by working with land managers, community groups, and trail users to reflect shared values.

Key tasks for the project include:

  • Mapping existing tracks and trails for hiking, walking, road biking, mountain biking, gravel biking, and rail trails;
  • Reviewing research and consultation findings to identify gaps and opportunities; and
  • Developing proposed trail concepts through detailed mapping and final concept designs.

What are the next steps?

It is expected that a draft report will be made available in 2025 for community consultation.
