With the help of Council's Sustainability and Open Spaces Teams, students planted native grasses, shrubs, and trees across Dederang, Wandiligong, Harrietville and Myrtleford. These plants were sourced to suit the environment, and help grow sustainable habitats for existing flora and fauna. Students will also participate in a tree planting exercise in Bright next week.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr John Forsyth, celebrated Council's participation in this annual event.
"National Tree Day not only gives students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and spend time outdoors, but also encourages them to learn about the value of planting for their future," he said.
"Many young people are well aware of the need to live sustainably and National Tree Day gives them the opportunity to actively take part in creating sustainable habitats in their own backyards."
A key feature of this year's activities included an interactive presentation about the creatures who live in these unique environments.
Students were encouraged to reflect on the animals that rely on these places for food and shelter and consider the ecosystems that exist within natural environments.
Council has supported schools to participate in National Tree Day across the Alpine Shire since 2015.
