Dederang Recreation Reserve will see the trophy travel through on Wednesday, 28 August 2024 as it makes its way to Melbourne.

The tour has been to over 640 destinations since its establishment in 2003, visiting 482 schools, 401 hospitals and aged care facilities, and participating in over 2,100 community events.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr John Forsyth, welcomed the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to Dederang.

'The past few years have been very difficult for the Alpine Shire community with recent flooding and the major landslip on the Bogong High Plains Road, so we are very much looking forward to coming together to welcome the Cup to boost our community spirit,' he said.

Dederang Picnic Race Club President, Marcus Goonan, said that the inclusion of Dederang as a destination on the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour is a testament to the rich racing culture and community spirit of the town.

"This recognition not only puts Dederang on the map (again) but also highlights the significance of regional racing events like the Dederang Picnic Races, which will run again on 22 February 2025," he said.

"It’s a moment of pride for all of us and a unique opportunity to celebrate our contribution to Australia's racing heritage."

Mr Goonan said that the Dederang Picnic Race Club is thrilled to be a part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and eagerly anticipate the arrival of this iconic trophy in Dederang.

"This event is a chance for our community to come together and share in the excitement of the Cup, while also showcasing the charm and tradition of Dederang," he said.

Dederang Recreation Reserve Committee of Management President, Darren Allsop, said that the Melbourne Cup is not just a horse race but also a cultural event.

"Being a part of the Tour can highlight Dederang's own sporting and recreational activities, aligning them with broader cultural celebrations," he said.

"The event provides an opportunity to engage the local community in an event of national and international significance, which can foster community spirit, pride and involvement."

Mr Allsop said that being a part of the Tour has the potential to increase visibility and tourism interest in the area, benefitting local businesses and the economy.

"The visit might prompt further use of the Dederang Recreation Reserve and its facilities for future events," he said.

"It may provide opportunities for local schools or historical societies to engage with the history of the Melbourne Cup or to showcase the history of Dederang’s own Picnic Races and Dederang Cup."

There will be a number of events held throughout the Alpine Shire on the same day to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Further details about the events are to come. Follow Alpine Shire Council on Facebook and Instagram to find out more closer to the date.
