$2.6 million stadium expansion for Myrtleford

THE Myrtleford Indoor Sports Stadium will receive a $2.6 million expansion after the State Government confirmed it would contribute $1.3 million to the project.

Alpine Shire Council will provide a further $1.25 million and the Myrtleford and District Basketball Association will contribute $50,000.

Council’s Mayor Ron Janas said the project will add an additional multi-use court, accessible change room and toilets and rejuvenate the existing building.

“This is a great result for sport and recreation in Myrtleford,” he said.

“The stadium is a key recreation facility for the community, and this extension means more people will have the opportunity to participate in their favourite sport.”

In September 2014, Council was granted $30,000 funding from Sports and Recreation Victoria to evaluate the feasibility and options for a second indoor stadium court in Myrtleford.

Three site options were considered, including partnerships on school sites. The study recommended expanding the existing facility.

Cr Janas said the upgrade will allow sporting groups to increase their members and extend their programs.

“More than 15 local sporting and recreation groups provided letters of support for the project, showing how much desire there is in the community to expand this facility,” he said.

“Opportunities include extending the summer basketball competition, establishing a winter basketball competition, expanding netball and lifeball programs and attracting tournaments and events.

“With an additional court space, programming could be extended to include table tennis, indoor soccer, gymnastics, group fitness and school holiday activities.”

The Myrtleford Indoor Sports Stadium (MISS) Expansion project has been made possible through $1.3 million from the State Government’s Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, $1.25 million from Council and $50,000 contribution from the Myrtleford and District Basketball Association.
