Festival has plenty on offer for Alpine seniors

Healthy living, culture, sport and practical skills – all these interests and more make up a packed calendar of local events being staged in the Alpine Shire for the 2015 Victorian Seniors Festival.

Locally, the festival will officially open at 2pm on Sunday 4 October at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, with Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Jan Vonarx, performing the honours.

What follows is a week full of events, from open days at the local Men’s Sheds and drumming workshops through to “come and try” exercise programs and social media lessons.

The week is bookended by a life ball demonstration game on Friday 2 October at the Myrtleford Basketball stadium (“the most fun seniors can have on a basketball court”), and a come and try croquet day on Saturday 17 October at the Bright Croquet Club.

Cr Vonarx encouraged anyone who considered themselves a “senior” to join in the festival’s offerings.

“This is all about embracing and enjoying life as an older person, continuing to grow and learn, engaging with your community and, most importantly, having fun,” she said.

“Everyone is welcome, and most of the activities are either free or a very nominal cost, so it’s a great opportunity to get out of the house and get involved.”

Whatever your passion – bowls, croquet, fly-fishing, films, exhibitions or meeting up with friends for coffee, scones, songs, fun and laughter – there is something for everyone at the 2015 Victorian Seniors Festival in the Alpine Shire.
