Nominate a young person for achievements

9 July 2015

Alpine Shire Council is calling for nominations of inspirational young people for its annual Youth Awards.

Run by the Alpine Shire Youth Council, the awards recognise the outstanding achievements of people aged between 12 and 24 in academic, artistic, community, sporting or workplace endeavours.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Jan Vonarx, said the awards were a fantastic way of recognising the great work that local young people do every day.

“More often than not the contribution and achievements of our young people can go unrecognised, and these awards are our way of acknowledging and thanking young people,” she said.

“And because the awards are organised by the Youth Council, it’s as much about young people celebrating the achievements of their peers as it is about adults recognising young people.”

Winner of the 2014 Sports Award, Teagan Atherstone, encouraged the community to nominate anyone who deserved to be recognised for their contribution to the community, excelling in their chosen field or for simply inspiring others.

“It was such a surprise to be nominated last year, and an amazing honour to actually win the award among a very strong field of candidates,” she said.

“The awards are great because they allow young people to show what they can offer the community, and just to be nominated, let alone win, is something really valuable you can put on your CV.”

Nominees for the Youth Awards must be aged between 12 – 24 years and must have lived, worked or studied in the Alpine Shire during 2015. Nominations close on Friday 31 July 2015. Winners will be announced at a Youth Awards night in Mt Beauty on Friday, 23 October.

Nomination forms are available by clicking here, or in hard copy at Myrtleford, Bright and Mount Beauty libraries and Council’s Bright Office.
