Council endorses Alpine Better Places project design work

6 May 2015

Alpine Shire Council has approved the development of detailed designs for an estimated $6.2million in capital works to be delivered over the next five years in Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright as part of its Alpine Better Places project.

At its meeting last night, Councillors agreed to the priorities set by the community through consultations in March.

Alpine Mayor, Cr Jan Vonarx said it was great to see so many people involved in the consultations in each town, especially young people.

“Young people were well represented in the 93 people who told us what their priorities were for their town. That’s important because they will shape these towns into the future,” she said.

Consultants will now prepare detailed designs for:
• POREPUNKAH – indicative construction cost estimate: $1.8 m
Nicholson Street and Riverside linkages - Reduce area of road pavement; define pedestrian crossings and vehicular areas. Create clear visual and physical connections from the town centre to the riverside.
Porepunkah Gateway - Improve entrance and signage at Great Alpine Road.

• BRIGHT – indicative construction cost estimate: $2.15m
Mafeking Square – Improved pedestrian access, streetscape amenity and character.
Gavan Street - Define pedestrian crossing locations, directional signage to Mafeking Square/town centre and enhance street furniture.
Barnard Street - Improved pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, streetscape furniture and character.

• MYRTLEFORD – indicative construction cost estimate: $2.3 m
Myrtle Street - Upgrades and conversion to single lane in each direction, improving pedestrian crossing points and aesthetics whilst maintaining parking and access for all road users
Happy Valley Creek - Improve the interface and environmental value of the waterway as an attractive town asset.
