Alpine to host National Mountain Bike Championships

26 February 2014

THE best mountain bikers in the country will take to the trails around Bright to battle it out across the Labour Day weekend in March.

The Alpine Shire will host the Subaru National Mountain Bike Championships from March 6 – 9, attracting hundreds of riders and supporters from across the country.

Alpine Shire Mayor Peter said the event was a fantastic addition to the local events calendar, with benefits reaching past just the weekend.

“Not only is this a fantastic way for competitors and their supporters to enjoy everything the Alpine Shire has to offer, it also brings the exciting sport right to the doorstep of locals,” Cr Roper said.

“The economic benefit of an event like this goes beyond the short term – as our profile among riders and cycling event organisers continues to build, local businesses will benefit more and more.”

With something special for competitors and spectators alike, Bright’s take on the Australian Mountain Bike Championships will showcase the best of the best across five events, making use of the best tracks the region has to offer.

Cr Roper said the event would help cement the Alpine Shire as one of the country’s premier cycling destinations.

“We have some of the best tracks and trails for mountain biking, fantastic touring routes for road cycling and a network of shared trails for the recreational rider and families,” Cr Roper said.

“There’s something to offer everyone who enjoys spending time on two wheels.

“We’re particularly proud to welcome an event of this calibre.”
