Inspiring locals recognised at Community Awards

AN RSL president, CFA captain, world-class cyclist and talented young dancer are among the locals recognised for their inspiring achievements at the Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards.

Nine residents, one organisation and an event received awards at Australia Day celebrations across the Alpine Shire on Sunday (26 January).

Alpine Shire Mayor Peter Roper congratulated everyone who was nominated for the awards and thanked them for their fantastic contribution to their communities.

“These awards are such a great way to recognise the unsung heroes of our shire,” he said.

“We celebrate the contribution of all of our residents, and have the opportunity to pay particular tribute to a handful of them.

“We know that there are people do amazing things every day, giving their time and skills to their communities in truly inspiring ways.

“Australia Day is the perfect opportunity to send out the message that we are grateful to every one of you for your dedication and commitment – you help our communities to be great places to live.”

Myrtleford RSL President Kevin Pitts was awarded Citizen of the Year and Myrtleford and District Local Achiever of the year, for his dedication to the Myrtleford RSL and community as a whole.

The winners were:

* Alpine Shire Citizen of the Year - Kevin Pitts

* Community Event of the Year - Alpine Shire Relay for Life
* Community Organisation of the Year - Tawonga Red Cross

Local Achiever of the Year:
* Bright and District - Gary Weston
* Kiewa Valley - Paul van der Ploeg
* Myrtleford and District - Kevin Pitts

Local Young Achiever of the Year:
* Bright and District - Isabella Bartlett
* Myrtleford and District - Peanut Schaefer
* Kiewa Valley - Cooper Cappellari

* Lifetime Achievement Award - Bill Sutton
* Lifetime Achievement Award - Paul and Helen L'Huillier
