Council now managing Myrtleford Senior Citizens Centre

14 January 2014

Alpine Shire Council has assumed responsibility for the management of the Myrtleford Senior Citizens Centre in a bid to ease the pressure on committee of management volunteers and build a strong future for the valuable community asset.

Increasing governance requirements for management committees are placing an ever-increasing burden on volunteers.

Councillor Ron Janas said interested community members will still have the opportunity to be involved in the future direction of the centre as members of an advisory group.

“With the increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining volunteers and the need to maintain the viability of this very valuable asset, it was felt that bringing management in-house was the best way to ensure the sustained future of the centre,” he said.

“The final committee meeting was held in December and a new advisory group, made up of representatives from user groups and interested public parties, is in the process of being established to help guide the future direction of the Centre.

“We’re very grateful for the hard work the committee has done in the past and look forward to working with the advisory group to ensure the facility continues to grow and support the community.”

Manager Communities Kathryn Maxwell said the facility was in excellent condition, but was under-utilised.

“The centre has great potential to become a more popular venue for community groups,” she said.

“There are significant periods each week when the centre is not used, so there’s an opportunity to build up the number of users and create a centralised facility for the community.”

Anyone interested in sitting on the advisory group is encouraged to contact Council for further details.

Over the coming months Council will be undertaking building maintenance to improve the amenity of the building and to reduce utility costs of running the Centre.

Bookings for the Centre can now be made in person at the Shire Office in Bright or by calling (03) 5755 0555.

The facility - hall or meeting room/s (and kitchen) can be hired out at a community rate of $15.40 per hour or a commercial rate of $44.50 per hour.
