Draft 2012 Municipal Early Years Plan available for public comment

THE release of a draft 2012 Municipal Early Years Plan will help guide the future of early education, care, health services and activities for young local children.

The plan is available for public comment until Tuesday, 18 September.

Alpine Shire Council released the draft plan at its Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday, 7 August.

Director Corporate and Community Trevor Britten said the plan identifies strategies to give local children the “best start in life”.

“It’s obviously vitally important to give our children the best possible start and this plan outlines how best to do that,” he said.

“This is a local area plan that addresses the development and coordination of early education, care, health services and activities for our young children.

“The plan has been developed to reflect local needs and will allow Council to develop and better evaluate early years services, activities and facilities, maximise resources and undertake long-term planning for our youngest residents.”

The plan is available online at www.alpineshire.vic.gov.au under the “On exhibition” tab, or in hard copy at Council’s Bright Offices and Myrtleford and Mount Beauty libraries.

The plan outlines a number of ways for Council to work with the community to improve outcomes for young children, including:

• Increasing support for young children and their families;
• Focusing attention on disadvantaged/vulnerable families;
• Promoting ease of access to services; and
• Increasing the responsiveness of services and efficient use of other resources by developing service integration and collaboration.

Key initiatives of the plan are:
1 Create a holistic approach to building child and family strong communities;
2 To set the best foundation;
3 Link and connect services to provide best childhood development outcomes;
4 Equip and support parents;
5 Supporting children and families with additional needs to improve outcomes for all children and reduce inequalities in outcomes between groups of children; and
6 Encourage safe and healthy practices for our children.
