NERDS takes out national prize

FOLLOWING on from its success at the Local Government Professionals conference in February, the North East Regional Development Scheme (NERDS) has secured national recognition.

NERDS has taken out the National Award for Local Government – Regional Collaboration (Small Councils) and will now compete against 26 other winners for the overall National Award for Excellence.

The scheme was pioneered by Alpine Shire Council and operates in cooperation between Alpine, Indigo, Benalla, Mansfield, Murrindindi, Moira, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Wodonga and Towong Shire Councils to improve training opportunities for staff.

Council’s Manager Governance Sonia Sanchez del Rio said further recognition of the program was a positive sign for future plans to make it accessible to the community.

“We’re planning to roll out NERDS to community members who wish to undertake training at a fraction of normal costs,” she said.

“This recognition is a fantastic sign that we’re doing something right and we look forward to an exciting future for NERDS.”

The scheme was formed to provide opportunities for staff to undergo quality training without having to travel to larger regional centres or cities.

NERDS has coordinated the delivery of face-to-face training with organisations such as VECCI, LifeWorks and LGPro.
