Slide safety boosted

COUNCILis focussing on making the Centenary Park river pool slide in Bright safer for users.

The slide is a much-loved part of the Ovens River swimming pool.

Following an audit by the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA), Council has made a number of changes to comply to safety recommendations.

Director Corporate and Community Trevor Britten said the audit recommended replacing the slide with a compliant one, providing Lifeguards and restricting unsupervised access.

“The uniqueness and popularity of the slide makes the option of removing it unfeasible, but a number of other safety measures have been put in place,” he said.

“Several years ago Council introduced Lifeguards and restricted access to the diving board and slide and continues to improve signage in compliance with the RLSSA recommendations.

During this summer the slide gate will be replaced with one similar to that used on the diving board, and appropriate signage installed, in an effort to further mitigate risks associated with its use.

Council will consider the installation of a new, compliant slide in the 2012/13 budget.
