Council wins ECO-Buy award

Alpine Shire Council has won the ECO-Buy Award for excellence in green purchasing by a small rural council for the second time in three years.

The award recognizes the largest investment in green products as a percentage of available funds by a small rural council.

Some of Council’s environmentally friendly purchases in the 2008/09 award period include

  • Buying fuel efficient vehicles to replace ageing fleet and equipment
  • Thermal pool blanket for Mount Beauty swimming pool
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs and solar lighting
  • Showerheads, dual flush toilets and sensor lighting in toilets
  • Recycled paper for copying and printing
  • Solar heat reflective paint

39% of Council’s green purchases were on recycled products, including organic mulch, recycled paper, biodiesel, cleaning products, banner stands, bollards and pencils. The recycled paper purchases alone saved an acre of forest.

Council also utilized water saving initiatives such as drought tolerant grasses, computer controlled irrigation systems and water tanks.

Waste Management Officer Sandra Light said the award proved that Council was a leader in caring for the environment.

“This is great reward for our commitment and actions towards being an environmentally friendly shire,” she said.

“Over the past four years we have continued to increase our spending on green purchases. These purchases have already made a difference. However we won’t become complacent with this award and we are always looking to improve our environmentally friendly initiatives.”

Council will continue its commitment to the environment over the coming weeks with the installation of rain water tanks at Council’s Bright offices. Council also plans to install solar panels in the next year. Council has also recently bought a hybrid car.
