Free chance to dispose of unwanted chemicals

Alpine Shire residents are encouraged to rid their homes of unwanted household chemicals for free on Saturday 8 May as apart of the Detox Your Home program.

Residents will be able to safely dispose of chemicals at either the Wangaratta or Indigo Shire depots. Wangaratta's Newman Street depot will be open from 8am to 11am while Indigo's depot on Radcliffe Road, Beechworth will be open from 1:30pm to 4:30pm.

Deputy Mayor Cr Daryl Pearce said household chemicals can be dangerous if they are not stored or disposed of safely.

"Storing old chemicals in the shed or under the sink increases the risk of poisoning around the home," he said.

"Sending chemicals to landfill or even pouring small amounts down storm water drains can pollute creeks and rivers, harming plants and animals."

Among the types of chemicals accepted for disposal are:

  • Household chemicals such as aerosol cans and insect sprays
  • Garden chemicals such as fertilisers, fungicides and insecticides.
  • Automotive chemicals such as transmission fluids, battery acid and fuels (such as petrol, diesel, kerosene).
  • Workshop chemicals such as paint strippers, solvent-based glues, water and oil-based paints, paint thinner, varnish and turpentine
  • Other miscellaneous chemicals such as acids and alkalis, artists' paints, extinguishers, gas cylinders and swimming pool chemicals

Chemicals that cannot be accepted include commercial, industrial and farm chemicals as well as motor oil and waste asbestos.

Detox Your Home collections are held all year throughout Victoria and run by the Department of Sustainability and Environment. For a full list of accepted chemicals, drop-off locations and times visit www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au. Council is hopeful that an Alpine Shire facility will be included on the list of mobile collection sites next year.
