John McIlroy the 2010 Alpine Shire Council citizen of the year.

Award for 160 years of service

The community members who nominated John McIlroy added up the years he has spent on a range of community groups and determined that he has given the equivalent of 160 years of service.

On Australia Day, John was named the Alpine Shire Council Citizen of the Year.

Mayor, Cr Nino Mautone said Mr McIlroy's service had reached so far, there probably were few people in the community who hadn't benefited from his efforts.

"While he has served a couple of organisations for 50 years, Mr McIlroy is held in high esteem throughout the community and is just as well-known for his great sense of fun," Cr Mautone said.

"It gives me great pleasure to present Mr McIlroy with the Citizen of the Year award," he said.

"The Australia Day celebrations and presentation of awards is a great way to recognise those who add so much to our communities through their community service. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their time as this volunteerism enhances life in the Shire and adds to that sense of community."

Council presented a range of awards around the Shire.
