Council issues alert over weekend heatwave

Alpine Shire Council is warning residents and visitors that the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast heatwave temperatures for Wangaratta and district for Saturday 9, Sunday 10 and Monday 11 January.

Council's Manager Community Services, Trevor Britten said Council has activated the alert phase of its draft Heatwave Response Plan and will extend the opening hours of its swimming pools and river pools on these days.
"When the temperatures are as high as forecast, it's important for people to drink lots of water and non-alcoholic fluids, cool down in a shower or bath, wear light clothing and obviously, never leave anyone in a closed parked car," Mr Britten said.

"Council has a fact sheet available for anyone interested in more information. In addition, the Myrtleford and Mount Beauty swimming pools will be open until 8pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 9 - 11 January. The Bright and Porepunkah river pool life guards will also be in attendance until 7pm over these three days," he said.

The latest 7-day forecasts can be accessed from the Bureau website.
