L2P Learner Mentor Driver Program

Do you have barriers making it difficult to complete the 120 hours of driving experience required for you to go for your P plates?

The L2P program is a state wide initiative managed by Vic Roads. It is aimed at assisting young learner drivers (aged from 16 – 20) who are facing significant barriers to completing the 120 mandatory hours of on road driving experience.

L2P is a community based volunteer program designed to provide access to driving practice on public roads for learner drivers under the supervision of a fully licenced driver. Learner drivers are matched with a volunteer supervising driver (Mentor) from the community, who works with the learner so that they can achieve their goal of 120 hours.

The L2P Program is based on a four stage graduated licensing system with a professional driving instructor guiding the learner’s progress. Learners have access to up to 7 free lessons with a registered driving school throughout their time in the L2P program to assess their progress and improve their skills. At the start of the program the learner is assessed by a professional driving instructor to determine their level of driving competence.

If you live in the Alpine Shire, already have your Learner’s Permit and you need help to get your driving hours, call Alpine Shire L2P Coordinator on 0418 736 665 or email L2P@alpineshire.vic.gov.au for more information.

Volunteer driving supervisors needed

The Alpine Shire L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is currently looking for more community-minded people to volunteer as supervising drivers for young learner drivers in the shire.

Mentors are not driving instructors, but they help young people by giving them opportunities to drive. The learners have regular lessons and are assessed by our professional driving instructor to determine the level at which they are competent to drive.

We have quite a few new learner drivers coming onto the program and are particularly looking for supervisors in the Bright and Myrtleford areas.

Mentors will have a full drivers licence, undertake a Police Check, Driver History Check and Working with Children Check and be able to commit a minimum of 2 hours per week to work with a young person. Volunteers also undertake comprehensive training conducted by VicRoads appointed L2P Mentor Training Facilitators. For mentor training dates, contact our L2P Coordinator on the details below.

As a volunteer with the program you will be invited to regular mentor meetings where mentors share their experiences with learner drivers, and receive resources and information about safer driving.

If you are interested in volunteering with the program, helping young people in our community become safe drivers, call L2P Coordinator on 0418 736 665 or email L2P@alpineshire.gov.vic.au.
