Tender for Bright Sports Centre pool hall works awarded

A TENDER for a major construction component of the redevelopment of the Bright Sports Centre has been awarded, paving the way for work to start in the near future.

Alpine Shire Council this month awarded the tender, for around $430,000 in work, to Barton Street Developments Pty Ltd.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Ian Ellett said the redevelopment will involve an extension to the northern end of the building.

“Works include a new plant room, outdoor deck and replacement of the existing pool hall roof,” he said.

"In conjunction with the building works, previously awarded contracts will see new air heating and ventilation equipment, new water treatment and new water heating plant installed.

“As much as possible, Council is trying to time these works to fit in around school terms to reduce the disruption to the centre’s Learn to Swim program.”

The pool will be closed for up to 5 months once construction starts, and Council will work with pool membership holders to either transfer their membership to the gym area or suspend their membership until the pool is reopened.

The overall budget for the redevelopment has been made up of funding from the Federal Government ($179,000), State Government’s Community Facility Funding Program ($400,000) and Council ($221,000).

Mr Ellett said the project would benefit community members and visitors who make use of the Bright Sports Centre pool.

“This work will improve facilities for every pool user, from the young children in Learn to Swim classes to the older residents making use of the pool for hydrotherapy sessions,” he said.

“Since Council purchased the pool in 2009, we have worked to continually improve it by adding new equipment and services.

“This redevelopment will continue to cement the Bright Sports Centre as a highly valuable asset for the community.”
